Improving kindergarten

      teacher’s capacity

      for teaching

      life skills

Vietnam has ~ 5.4 million under-5-year-old children. Yet, early childhood education is still under-invested. Preschool teachers are not equipped with needed tools and resources for their work. We envision Kidskills as a national movement to empower and inspire nearly 400.000 preschool teachers to teach life skills in kindergartens in Vietnam and beyond. Life skills education is considered important but just a voluntary subject in Vietnamese kindergarten. Teachers are not trained to teach it professionally. Meanwhile, they manage a large class and perform multiple compulsory tasks. No time left for researching and developing other needed educational activities! Kidskills is meant to support teachers and change this reality.

We are a team of teachers and students of the National College for Education with a mission of empowering preschool teachers and improving their competences of teaching life skills in the digital age. Without competent teachers, life skills education could not be implemented properly and without ICT, teachers might not survive in the digital age and the impact could not be amplified!

The teachers and students learnt how to use ICT tools for example Office 365 tools to survey, create presentation, learning materials and blogging; and Zoom to connect with teachers and students, etc. We created 12 sets that contain lesson plans, lectures, pictures, poems, songs, posters, magazines, videos, nursery rhymes, plays, calendars, new year cards, photo keychains etc. that support life skills education.

These materials then were introduced in numerous workshops, events and exhibitions to teachers and kindergartens. We also spread these to online communities on Facebook. Teachers started using those in their lessons. First were practice kindergartens of the National College for Education. Then teachers and preschool unions in Yen Bai, Da Lat, Lao Cai, Da Nang, Thailand, India and Sri Lanka! What's even more amazing is that the project team has accessed and distributed the resource pool to teachers of deaf children.

In the final analysis, within 15 months, we have reached out to approximately 150 preschool students and teachers. Our project has shared a wide range of articles appreciated by the community of teachers, participated in fostering topics on The application of Information Technology in management and teaching for about 2,500 teachers nationwide.

Now we are growing! We co-developed the first innovation early childhood educator community on Facebook. Periodical events are organized virtually for teachers from all over Vietnam and beyond to share and learn from each other. Two main sections are digital literacy professional development and ideas to teach life skills education for children. We also host a bank of public life skills education materials on our website that teachers and kindergartens can utilize at any time. Our long term plan is to developing a learning management system (LMS) including ready made e-lessons about life skills for teachers and teacher students from every corner of the country! Also, more activities for teaching life skills to deaf students will be developed!
